Counselling, Social Work and Referral: A Personal Story
Personal Story 1
A lady came in to seek counselling services at Yong-en. When she first came in, she was in tears, depressed, felt hopeless and planned to file for a divorce. This lady was married for more than fifteen years. She and her husband have two children very dear to them. She had invested all her energy and tried everything possible to save her marriage, but her efforts proved to be futile. A Yong-en Counsellor worked through various issues with her over four counseling sessions, and the client received all the help she required. At Christmas, she wrote the Counsellor a card: “Appreciated your advice during my down-hearted period. You have lent a listening ear to a stranger despite your busy schedule. Your patience and kind-heartedness really touch me. I have learnt to be contented with my current life.”
Personal Story 2
Mr S walked into the office with a big smile and the first thing he said was “Praise God! I found a job!” Just weeks ago, he came to Yong-en Care Centre an angry and demanding man. His wife had left and taken away all his money. He also had a work accident and was unable to keep his job. A Yong-en social worker attended to him and offered him friendship and encouragement. He also received food rations and transport allowance to tide over the difficult period. His attitude gradually turned positive and he managed to face his circumstances squarely. Through referrals, he was willing to take up a 14-hour job to slaughter chickens. He came back to the office to thank us, “Your help has been like a friend giving me coal in a winter’s day”.
