The Australian Psychological Society (APS) defines positive ageing as “the process of maintaining a positive attitude, feeling good about yourself, keeping fit and healthy, and engaging fully in life as you age.” (Positive Ageing, n.d.)
In order to achieve this, the government has launched a national blueprint for ageing, known as the Action Plan for Successful Ageing. This action plan encompasses a system of proactive outreach, preventive health and active ageing programmes for seniors in every neighbourhood (Auto, 2021).
At Yong-en, we align with this blueprint as well. In December 2020, Yong-en Active Hub (YEAH!) was established in Bukit Merah. This new and vibrant environment encourages seniors to age actively through activities that promote health and wellness. Gym tonic, an elderly Gym Exercise Programme, is also located within YEAH!, providing seniors with Exercise-As-Medicine strength training to improve their functional abilities.
YEAH! has seen a 6% increase in enrolment since 2020, highlighting the positive effects our programme has brought about for our seniors.
One successful initiative by YEAH! is the Smart Nation Apps Workshop. Lecturers and students from Ngee Ann polytechnic collaborated with Yong-en in a 12-session workshop to equip seniors with knowledge of using eight beneficial governmental apps.
A total of 103 enthusiastic seniors and 424 students participated in the workshops from November 2019 to January 2020.
Amy Chng, one of the participants, expressed her gratitude towards Yong-en for providing such an opportunity for seniors to learn about Smartphone Apps. She is pleased that she is now equipped with such IT knowledge.
Yong-en is honoured to leverage on multiple partners in the sharing of their time and skills to our beneficiaries. By connecting our seniors to such fun and interactive learning sessions, varied and holistic care is offered to those under our care.
Yong-en will continue to encourage positive ageing amongst seniors so that they get to lead healthy and productive lives.
