Positive Ageing
The Australian Psychological Society (APS) defines positive ageing as “the process of maintaining a positive attitude, feeling good about yourself, keeping fit and healthy, and engaging fully in life as you age.” (Positive Ageing, n.d.)
In order to achieve this, the government has launched a national blueprint for ageing, known as the Action Plan for Successful Ageing. This action plan encompasses a system of proactive outreach, preventive health and active ageing programmes for seniors in every neighbourhood (Auto, 2021).
At Yong-en, we align with this blueprint as well. In December 2020, Yong-en Active Hub (YEAH!) was established in Bukit Merah. This new and vibrant environment encourages seniors to age actively through activities that promote health and wellness. Gym tonic, an elderly Gym Exercise Programme, is also located within YEAH!, providing seniors with Exercise-As-Medicine strength training to improve their functional abilities.
YEAH! has seen a 6% increase in enrolment since 2020, highlighting the positive effects our programme has brought about for our seniors.
