Every person living with dementia has a story.

Some were teachers. Some raised families. Some loved dancing or gardening. Others still light up when they hear a familiar song or gather around a mahjong table with friends. While dementia may gradually affect memory and daily life, it never changes who a person is.

For over two decades, this belief has guided Yong-en Care Centre’s approach to dementia care.

In 2003, recognising the growing needs of Chinatown’s ageing community, Yong-en established its Dementia Day Care Centre to provide a safe and supportive environment for seniors while offering much-needed respite to their families and caregivers. At a time when dementia was still poorly understood, Yong-en sought to ensure that every individual remained connected, engaged, and valued.

Over the years, dementia care has evolved and so has Yong-en. Yet one thing has remained unchanged, the belief that every person possesses unique strengths and deserves to be seen beyond their diagnosis.

Today, Yong-en adopts a strength-focused, person-centred approach to care. Activities are thoughtfully adapted to each individual’s interests and abilities, enabling clients to participate meaningfully and continue living with dignity and purpose. Whether through music, movement, reminiscence, cognitive games, or a friendly game of mahjong, every moment of connection matters.

In 2025, Yong-en strengthened its continuum of dementia care through the launch of ENLIVEN, a seven-week Cognitive Intervention Programme for persons living with mild to moderate dementia. Appointed by MOH-AIC as one of only three agencies to pilot the programme, Yong-en continues to empower seniors to maintain their cognitive, social, and emotional well-being.

Beyond direct services, Yong-en also invests in raising dementia awareness through regular Dementia Awareness and Pre-Dementia workshops, equipping individuals, families, and organisations with the knowledge and confidence to better support persons living with dementia.

The impact extends beyond the individuals attending our programmes. Families gain peace of mind knowing their loved ones are cared for in an environment where they are understood, respected, and encouraged to thrive in their own way. Caregivers find not only practical support, but also a trusted partner to journey alongside them through the challenges of dementia.

As Yong-en celebrates 30 years of serving the community, its Dementia Day Care continues to reflect the same heart that inspired its beginnings. For more than two decades, this has been the essence of dementia care at Yong-en, not simply caring for persons living with dementia but empowering them to live with dignity and purpose. Because every person matters, and every story deserves to be seen, heard, and valued.
