*Adrian, a dedicated caregiver to his wife, suffered from a mental disorder. Struggling with financial and health issues, Adrian turned to Yong-en in July 2021, where social worker Felix enrolled him in our Food Security programmes (i.e. PantryPlenish and BreadWalk).

Beyond food security support, Adrian benefitted from holistic care at Yong-en. This included
befriending and Home Care Services. Volunteer Paul was a trusted confidante and befriender who offered advice and a listening ear to Adrian during challenging times. Initially, Paul personally delivered monthly food rations to Adrian’s home. In recent times, Paul developed spinal issues. However, he maintained his friendship with Adrian through monthly phone calls, well-being checks, and regularly reminded him to collect his food rations and take his medication, providing much-needed encouragement.

“He used to be reserved and kept to himself, but over time, I saw him becoming more receptive and even gaining confidence. I’ve always kept him in my prayers since the day I met him, knowing his situation,” Paul shared. “My fondest memory was when we celebrated our first Christmas together at his place. We sang carols, and I remembered how much Adrian enjoyed it—he even sang along!” Yong-en’s Home Care team also played a vital role in supporting Adrian. Managing his complex medical conditions, including vertiginous dizziness, diabetes, and mental health issues, Celestine, our Home Care nurse, monitored his medication regime and home environment for safety and reminded him of upcoming appointments.

“I saw improvements in Adrian ever since I first attended to him at the start of 2024. He became much calmer, more self-reliant, and less wary,” Celestine shared. With his increased self-confidence, she transitioned him from biweekly to monthly medication packing. Adrian’s life was transformed, and Yong-en was proud to witness it. Through Yong-en’s integrated services, he is able to stay independent. Adrian hopes to travel to Malaysia for a shopping trip with his wife, reflecting his rejuvenated spirit and renewed confidence.
