For over a decade, Yong-en has been offering free tuition to children from low-income families, aiming to level the playing field by equipping these young learners to reach their fullest potential. Dedicated tutors volunteer their time, effort, and resources, and through them, Yong-en is able to support over 40 students, from Primary 4 to Secondary 4, and provide a safe and nurturing environment for learning and growth. Each Saturday morning, young students fill the classrooms of Fairfield Methodist Church, carrying notebooks, pencils, and a heart full of hope.

Jacob*, a Secondary 3 student who has been with Yong-en’s Tuition Programme since his primary school days. He is a bubbly youth, often seen sharing jokes with peers and bonding with the tutors, whom he looks up to as “Kor Kors” and “Jie Jies.” Beyond academic progress, these relationships have helped him improve his communication, enhance his social skills, and grow in confidence.

His friendship with our volunteer tutor, Frederick has blossomed over the year. Stepping up to be more than a volunteer tutor, and with Yong-en’s knowledge, Frederick conducts study sessions with Jacob at the National University of Singapore (NUS), where they share lunch and laughter. Jacob now aspires to study the Sciences at NUS.

“I enjoy being in new environment, trying out new things, and making new friends.” Jacob said.

Yong-en’s Tuition Programme goes beyond academics. Through community partnerships, we curate and design enrichment workshops and excursions during school holidays. These activities foster life skills such as resilience, teamwork, and confidence. Through the holiday programmes, Jacob and his peers are exposed to experiences that inspire them to dream bigger.

Jacob knows he is surrounded by a community that is nurturing and believes in his potential. Yong-en strives to provide him, and students like him, with a level playing field where they can thrive despite of their background.

“He is a very hardworking student. He bought assessment books and practices consistently on his own time, which is truly inspiring. He scored A1 for both Math and Science for his final exams,” Frederick shared.

With vigour and determination, Jacob is committed to doing his best for his N-levels. He aims to study at NUS, and Yong-en hopes to be that stepping stone that helps him on his journey to success.
