Rediscovering My Purpose | About Mr Yong*

“From what I notice, ever since my dad joined Yong-en’s Dementia Day Care, my dad has been more cheery. Going to Yong-en has also provided him with some routine. This allowed us to focus on our daily lives, for example, going to work with a peace of mind as well as occupying him in the day. He has also shown to be more active and happier at home as he thinks of Yong-en as his ‘workplace,’ he is always sharing with us how lovely the staff are in ‘his workplace’ and how much he looks forward to it each day.” — *Mr. Yong’s son

Mr. Yong, a former PSA Harbour Pilot, was known for his efficiency and dedication. As a devoted husband and father, he took pride in a life of purpose. But after being diagnosed with dementia, his world began to change. When Mr. Yong joined Yong-en Dementia Day Care, his goal was to stay cognitively stimulated and engaged. What he found was an environment that not only supported his well-being but also empowered him to reclaim a sense of purpose. Mr. Yong quickly became an integral part of our Dementia Day Care, always volunteering to assist staff, leading morning exercises, co-facilitating activities, and preparing materials.

With the team’s support, Mr. Yong’s cognitive function has also improved. He enjoys puzzles and board games, activities that enhance his engagement, and his Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE*) score has improved from 14/30 in May 2024 to 23/30 in October 2024.
Mr. Yong’s journey is a powerful reminder of how the right environment can empower individuals to live fulfilling lives, even in the face of dementia. His story shows us with care, purpose, and support, it’s possible to thrive despite life’s challenges.
